WesleyRiot we finally got to watch the much talked about Avatar... I really enjoyed it, not what I expected at all but I was pleasantly surprised! Yes the story was just like Fern gully, but I didnt mind! All in all a really cool film, I liked the blue cat ppl! Then it hit me... 2007 I drew this...

half naked three fingered blue tribal woman!! Coincidence? LOL Its not a great drawing btw! XD
Anyways, im off to grab some dinner!

I recently saw Brad bird speak at Calarts and he was talking about how if you cant get the audience hooked in the 1st 20 minutes you have failed for the rest of the movie pretty much, and if you look at pixars recent films you can see what he is saying.. Up totally grabbed me, as did ratat, and Incredibles.. they really know what they are doing over there and Im hoping that Dreamworks scores big with How to Train your dragon...
Avatar seems like a story I have seen 4 or 5 times in the last 15 years and I dont need to see it again ( Pocahontes, Fern gully, Dances with Wolves ... same same ) and I cant see paying almost 20$ just to see it in 3d when I dont care about the characters ( LA 3d prices are atrocious ) and also I dont think James Cameron deserves the acclaim everyone is giving him on this.. ok you have mastered mo-cap.. good for you and Oh you made better 3d .. awesome.. but did you make a GREAT FILM .. no .. .no you didnt... I hope Hurt Locker or Up wins for best picture just to spank Avatar LOL but thats just me
The 20 minute test is a good one, but I don't think it should be the sole indicator of a movie's worth - especially when the movie is nearly 3 hours long.
1. of the 10 friends I have the most in common with, as far as film likes go, who DID see the movie 2 of them liked it and, they were all pretty convinced I would be ridiculously haterizing the film had I chosen to waste my money on it.
2. We are all film and Animation people so we are really critical of movies and tv .. I know enough about the movie to know it's not something I am going to enjoy
3. So say I do see it and sit through 3 HOURS of it and hate it.. then I have wasted my money... and again Im livid.. I dont like to be that way so Im opting out ...
also .. 20 minutes is plenty of time to set a film up and to get me to like a character... I didnt feel anything for the main guy, I dont care about him at all... I didnt car about any of th echaracters at 30 minutes and by the time I got there I was like .. 3 hours of these people .. whatever...
I will probably see it when its on tv, that way if it is the horrid thing I think it is I can change the channel and I didnt waste my time and money. Both of which are valuable to me. Also for anyome saying you HAVE TO SEE IT IN 3D to really experience it.. I say only this. If a film cannot stand on its own feet without gimmicks like 3d then it isnt worth anyones time.. Very few HIGH QUALITY and AMAZING films are made these days. 50 years ago people took their time.. thought things through, really set up shots, actors were ACTORS and not movie stars ( a terrible bunch ) Im feel like Im from the last of a generation of dinosaurs sometimes who remembers quality both in my film and animation.... ( there is still nothing more appealing than hand drawn on paper animation done by artisians who really knew how to draw ) anyhow..
Im not gonna muck up Kei's journal anymore with my rants on this film. It's just my opinion, and you dont have to agree
I only meant that it's hard to try and see the point of someone who is trashing a movie, particularly one that you happen to like, when you know that they have not seen said movie. I still think that it would be nice to take in and digest an intelligent opinion on the flaws of Avatar... I'd just like to hear it from someone who's suffered through the whole thing.
I agree that journals aren't a forum for debate, so I'm going to stop too; I just wanted to, briefly, explain myself.
